Towards Dialogue Systems with Agency in Human-AI Collaboration Tasks

Agency, the capacity to proactively shape events, is crucial to how humans interact and collaborate with other humans. In this paper, we investigate Agency as a potentially desirable function of dialogue agents, and how it can be measured and controlled. We build upon the social-cognitive theory of Bandura (2001) to develop a framework of features through which Agency is expressed in dialogue -- indicating what you intend to do (Intentionality), motivating your intentions (Motivation), having self-belief in intentions (Self-Efficacy), and being able to self-adjust (Self-Regulation). We collect and release a new dataset of 83 human-human collaborative interior design conversations containing 908 conversational snippets annotated for Agency features. Using this dataset, we explore methods for measuring and controlling Agency in dialogue systems. Automatic and human evaluation show that although a baseline GPT-3 model can express Intentionality, models that explicitly manifest features associated with high Motivation, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Regulation are better perceived as being highly agentive. This work has implications for the development of dialogue systems with varying degrees of Agency in collaborative tasks.

What AI Can? What AI Cannot?
We all will collectively accept the truth that nowadays almost everyone is selling their software by saying that it contains AI and it is really very popular amongst everyone. It's like if you want to start a discussion about any IT topic, the hot topic you find there will be AI. And everyone loves to speak about it confidently and pour out their own self-imagined concepts, which are mostly nowhere near to reality, though it's good that people are taking interest in such topics. It's easy to think of technology simply as saving time, making better use of resources, and providing enhanced information sharing. The Internet of Things is connecting our household appliances, security systems and environmental controls. This is currently primarily a series of mechanical processes, though Artificial Intelligence is gaining ground. In this context, interior designers need to work around the technology, creating decors that can house, complement and maximise all the devices. However, there is much more than that to being an interior designer in an era when smart homes are becoming more common. Technology is now able to inform and inspire interior designers too, adding to their creative toolbox.

Get ready for the new tech-driven intelligent workplace providers
Back when activity based working (ABW) was starting to gain real traction in places like Australia in 2013, we ran some research on which companies were most influential on the organisational leaders that were driving adoption of the work style. For many technology vendors and service providers the results from our more than 50 in-depth interviews with ABW adopters (now more than 250) were somewhat of a shock. The leading influencers were: #1 workpace strategy specialists; #2 interior designers; #3 peers that had adopted ABW; #4 real estate management firms and furniture providers. On the contrary, it was considered critical to get right and pretty much underpinned everything (see our checklist for guidance here). But technology providers simply didn't have a vision or narrative that was resonating with organisational leaders that also had to consider how to best use physical space while changing cultures.
